Get Ready For Summer Fun

The pictures are from that "other" disturbance they had in China in 1989.

When it was announced the Chinese government was awarded the privilege of hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics, I cringed. The games are about as much of the people as it was for Hitler in 1936. But then I had an epiphany. An awareness. The most public event in the world is the Olympics. Journalists, professional(even from the NYT) and amateur will be in the dragon's lair.
The Free Tibet movement has used this exposure to get their point ac cross. The Dali Lama is free to speak, if he dies the Chinese know they have nasty martyr to contend with. However, the attempted dousing of the Olympic Torch is not cool.

Crowds were lining the route across the city, waving Tibetan flags and "Free Tibet" banners. Others carried signs reading: "Stop the killing in Tibet", "No Olympic torch in Tibet" and "China talk to Dalai Lama," the UK's Press Association reported.

Amid chaotic scenes, police officers grabbed a man in west London as he tried to snatch the flame from torchbearers. Moments afterwards, a second man attempted to douse the torch with a fire extinguisher.

But the shock technique is there once again to bring awareness.
How about their treatment of comrades:

The authorities have still not commented in any detail on the incident, in which villagers said as many as 20 residents of Dongzhou were shot and killed by security forces on Tuesday night as they protested plans for a power plant, in the deadliest use of force by Chinese authorities against ordinary citizens since the Tiananmen massacre in 1989. Residents of Dongzhou said at least 42 people were missing.

Reached by telephone, the deputy propaganda chief of Shanwei, which is 15 miles to the north and has jurisdiction over the village, said the national government would issue its first statement about the incident no later than Sunday. “We will soon have a response to this, very soon — no later than tomorrow,” said the official, Liu Jingmao. “By then, this thing will be made public in the mainstream media and within the province.” Asked what he meant by “this thing,” the official cut short the conversation, saying: “I can’t say now. Anyway, it will be very soon, no later than tomorrow. That’s it.”

Later, a local television bulletin here said that three people had been killed in Dongzhou, and eight injured, describing them as “criminals” and giving no other details. This was the first known mention of the violence in China’s state-controlled media, and Beijing’s silence on the events underscored the vulnerability of a system that still practices heavy censorship in an age when sources of information beyond the government’s control are readily available.

And for you tree huggers:

Mount Zao is whipped every year by wet winds from across the Sea of Japan that form layers of ice and snow that shine like crystals. The Japanese call them juhyo, or ice trees.
Looking at satellite data, he and another professor, Junichi Kudo of Tohoku University, concluded that the acid in the trees came from sulfur produced at factories in China's Shanxi Province.

And for you worshippers of the crap infested Kyoto Treaty, China did not need to comply like the US. Yes, the country that is leaving pollution in the Sierra Nevada mountains i on our soil did not need to apply. You go Al Gore! Pick a tough fight!
And that barbaric "One Child"policy they government mandated, Ted Turner, the same who said we will be global warming induced cannibals, is supporting. So much for free will.

More to come

Holding the 2008 Olympics in China is a tacit support of that nation's oppressive policies. Sure, Beijing will be spiffed up for the games, but the underlying oppression of millions and millions of people will remain.

IMO, the United States should be boycotting the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. HERE is a recent WaPo editorial on China.

That's the best part of holding the Olympics in China. There will be such a microscope leveled on China on the runnup to the Olympics that all their flaws and faults will be revealed. The significance will be akin to the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Of course, war followed there.

I'm predicting economic conquest of China eventually, as they become more and more dependent on us.

But trying to douse the torch is asinine. This is the same semi-terrorist tactic that wackos keep using when protesting. What should be done is having the torchbearers sneak on t-shirts denouncing China. That would be a photograph.

I'm sure that the perfect utopian commie scene will be painted before wherever the media is permitted to go.

Well,

We will get a great look at China.

Hope they hide the missles.

Ballsy, China marches into Tibet with thousands of troops just months before the Olympics.

I think they are counting on the short attention span of western people, they may be right.

They will hide everything, and count on the western media to promote the feel good stories of China's athletes.

It's had to believe the Olympic Committee's motto of peaceful coexistence when they decide to hold their event in an oppressive, communist country.

This is certainly going to be an interesting Olympics.

wouldn't it be great to see an athlete risk it all to embarass the Chinese govt with statement?

what a shame Obob that the Olympics are being tainted with all this garbage!

I really can't believe that they gave China the Olympics. Always on watch is right--it is tacit support of China's policies.

Kissinger Doing the Weather
Back in the early 90s, I awoke with a wicked hang over one morning. As I sat on the floor watching the morning news, I swore I saw Harold Kissinger doing the weather. No one believed me. Professors discounted me. I have been vindicated.
