I am a firm believer in the allowing political conversation while one is bellied up to the bar. A neighborhood bar is an adult place and should allow adult conversation. Of course this has nothing to do with fellatio habits. But that illicit conversation is for the NC-17 Obob blog.
But a very interesting thread developed while discussing the economy last night. I have no idea who this guy was. All I gathered is that he hails from Southern Indiana and had a great theory on the demise of Social Security, abortion and the illegal immigration amnesty race.
I have maintained the belief the granting of amnesty to illegals is to acquire political credit to get a massive voting block. This is supported by the loyalty to the Democratic party by Blacks due to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The ironic part is LBJ could never have pushed this through had it not been for Republicans. The fellow Hoosier added a little twist to my belief:
Since Roe v. Wade, it is estimated 30,000,000 abortions have been committed in the US. When Social Security was created, there was a 16 to 1 pay-in ratio for paying into this entitlement. With the loss of the 30 million plus, we have drained that taxable income from our employed population to enter more revenue into Soc Sec. Throw in we are close to having 3 to 1 or a more dire 2 to 1 very shortly paying into Soc Sec when the Baby Boomers retire shortly.
Let's be conservative, shocking, and say we had 13 million of the innocents paying into Social Security with the 2005 Real GDP numbers into the economy:
It comes to a whopping $243,000,000,000. Divide by 1/8th and you have $38,880,000,000 to support it lost. So we let in the illegals, estimate half those numbers to make up and they kick in $16,440,000,000 to make the assist. Of course how much they drain is another issue.
So is it votes, or to bail out the Third Rail? The numbers are far from accurate but are there to give an idea of the amount of money at stake here. The new "citizens" could dump billions into the program.
A little note from Jeff Jacoby:
One tiny notch at a time, payroll taxes have been ratcheted up to a level that would have been unthinkable in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's day. No wonder Social Security is so unpopular among the young. It provides no security for their retirement, while impoverishing them in the present. In exchange for an eighth of their earnings today, it guarantees nothing but higher taxes tomorrow. That there are politicians who defend this arrangement wouldn't have surprised FDR. But how shocked he would be that they call themselves Democrats

If the Congress had left the Social Security money alone, instead of spending it on other things, the program would not only be fine, but would actually meet the financial needs of retired Americans.
Social Security is an insurance program, not a welfare, or handout program. Pay in, get back. Yes, first in, got the better rewards.
Social Security will die, but Congressional graft killed it, not the minority of people who abuse it, or the pay in - take out ratio.
I think the political philosophy behind the program, was a good one. We have to remember how bad it was for citizens before Social Security.
What kind of society do we want and how much are we willing to pay for that society.
Conditions in our society were pretty grim before federal safety nets, and I for one, don't mind the extra taxes to help people out.
I do mind my elected representatives allowing these programs to be so badly stripped of the money that was supposed to be used for helping people, not making bombs, or paying for their pet projects.
If the people agree to pay for other projects, fine, just don't steal money from other programs (federal departments) to pay for them.
Politicians don't want to raise taxes, so they take money from anywhere else in the government they can get it from.
And, now, we wonder why we are so broke.
It's not the compassionate government I mind, it's the crooks in Congress that bother me.
Good point about the impact of illegals on our Social Security system. However, I wonder if many of them will later qualify for SSA disability. After all, many of these immigrants work jobs which entail physical risk. And we also need to consider the SSA death benefit for children under 18.
When federal income tax was first enacted, nobody believed that the rate would ever go over 1%. Hmmmm....Just goes to prove that one the government intrudes, it will increase that intrusion.
once again the concept of limited governemt is not such a bad one. There is an outstanding line from PJ O'Rourke, giving money and power to the government is like giving whiskey and carkeys to a teenager.
