In a Newsweek cover story — half cheerleading and half-denial — Jonathan Alter lauds the president’s ability to provide the confidence and vision needed to lift us out of the recession. “The president is well poised to bring us back from the brink,” he pronounces. It is not the policies that Alter focuses upon, but Obama’s supposed ability to provide psychological solace to us.

But Boris Johnson, Tory(Conservative) Mayor of London is a dandy. I guess the mop topped toe head has a bit of grudge against the Labor Party PM Gordie Brown
Some of his darts:

A Boris campaign pitch: "Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chances of owning a BMW M3."
On Portsmouth: "[A city of] drugs, obesity, underachievement and Labour MPs."

As a friend of mine is going to struggle financially with health care costs and no insurance, socialized medicine rears it's ugly head. This is not isolated, hell hillary lives off this like the minotaur in a virgin.
And as people hold Great Britain's "perfect" example of caring for the sick, this comes up:

THE organs of 50 British National Health Service donors have been given to foreign patients who have paid about £75,000 each for private transplant operations in the past two years, freedom of information documents show.
The liver transplants took place at NHS hospitals, despite severe shortages that mean many British patients die while waiting for an organ that could save their lives.
The documents disclose that 40 patients from Greece and Cyprus received liver transplants in the UK paid for by their governments. Donated livers were also given to people from non-European Union countries including Libya, the United Arab Emirates, China and Israel.
The surgeons who carry out the transplants receive a share of the operation fee — believed to be about £20,000 — as all the work is done privately in NHS hospitals.

So, coffers and caskets get filled.
It goes without saying we have a broken health care system in this country. And I have no immediate answers. If I did I would be out making a my money as a consultant. But a nationalized system is still subject to corruption. Are we willing to forfeit better specialized care for general maintenance? Nobody wants to see a sick uninsured child get worse or die due to a lack financial resources/care. But aren't there better answers? Yes, meds are cheaper in Canada, but when you are in dire straits, you scoot south to the Continental 48.
I would expect Cameron of the Tories to use the pay for kidney scandal in the next Prime Minister's Q & A at P-Funk.

First segment: As Israel prepares a self defensive land insertion into Gaza, Alan Dershowitz writes an opine providing moral and legal evidence for Israeli actions. His conclusion is solid:

Until the world recognises that Hamas is committing three war crimes - targeting Israeli civilians, using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and seeking the destruction of a member-state of the UN - and that Israel is acting in self-defence and out of military necessity, the conflict will continue.

Is it the subtle anti-Semitic beliefs held by many countries or a fear of standing up to tyranny? What else must Israel do to appease those who desire her ultimate demise? These questions must be answered by the UN Security Council. They must grow a pair and allow Israel to finish the job. We would demand the same unequivocally.
Next segment: A great piece describing the frustrations of millions of humanitarians in the NY Post. It sums up the feelings of many Americans and Israelis:

Easily survived the shift. Almost had a barfight that would have been quickly comical. A drunk guy who did not hold his alcohol well apparently offended some older neck. So as the neck is singing "I'm Gonna Whoop Somebody's Ass" in a effort to either intimidate or be the first cock knocker of the new year, failed to evaluate his surroundings. Sure he had two friends, but they were not ready to fight. His failure of awareness would have swiftly brought a bartender with temporary anger issues, an person of large proportions who would have had my back and military trained individual who could have displaced all of us.
I properly informed the drunk ass it was unacceptable behavior and to get over it. Cooler heads prevailed and I got them all home via taxi. It would have been fun. The schmuck would never have seen it coming.
And I was laid up with the flu all day. Non booze related. Drew my ire in a nasty way.

Indiana is considered part of the Heartland. We are "flyover state." Our nickname, a Hoosier, pretty much means a rube or dumb hick. Thanks to obama, our state is not next to a state that is considered the new Holy City to the MSM. Chicago. Of course, like Jerusalem, it is a city of strife and conflict thanks to Daley and Machine he built coming back to haunt many. But I digress.
Not that I want the coverage and glory of a state like Cali or New York, but it is what it is.
New York has become another locale of political debate with the pre-coronation, or swearing in of another Kennedy, by the press. Some say it is bunk. Some say her lack of experience matches with others. Some may say, like obama, she will get the valued seat no matter hell or high water. Even though:

The road trip included stops in Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo to help convince Gov. David Paterson and voters she's the one to replace Clinton in the U.S. Senate.
But it was a tough crowd.
The black SUV pulled up to Syracuse city hall Wednesday morning. It was stop one on Kennedy's upstate tour.
But after meeting with Mayor Matt Driscoll, she ran into a buzz saw -- angry reporters who wanted her to do more talking and less listening.

+Misusing Personal Vehicles: Accused of buying seven vehicles from 1987 to 1992 for use by himself and his family and paying for them with more than $70,000 in official House funds, and $100,000 from his campaign funds.

+Obstruction of Justice: Charged that he had a House employee engrave brass plaques for him at no charge and then told the employee not to mention this to the grand jury investigating the case.

They've been clinging to the ridiculous notion that Chicago is Camelot for months now, cleaving to the idea with the willfulness of stubborn children. It must help them see Obama as some pristine creature, perhaps a gentle faun of a magic forest, unstained by our grubby politics, a bedtime story for grown-ups who insist upon fairy tales. But now the national media may finally be forced to confront reality.

Even national pundits with tingles running up their legs can't ignore the tape recordings in which Blagojevich speculated how he'd get the gold for picking Obama's successor.

"I'm going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain," Blagojevich allegedly said on tape. "You hear what I'm saying? And if I don't get what I want, and I'm not satisfied with it, then I'll just take the Senate seat myself."

Obama's Senate seat, Blagojevich allegedly said, "is a [expletive] valuable thing. You don't just give it away for nothing."

Then, on Nov. 5, he allegedly said, "I've got this thing, and it's [expletive] golden and, uh, I'm just not going to give it up for [expletive] nothing. I'm not gonna do it. And I can always use it, I can parachute me there."

The charges also include alleged attempts by the governor to influence the Tribune editorial board.

The governor threatened that if the Tribune didn’t support the governor, he wouldn’t approve the sale of Wrigley Field.

everyone has their own game. Mostly it's called Turkey Bowl. I've played with family in Batavia in my younger days and now with old drinking buddies in town.
Every year we arrive at nine a.m. with jerseys that seem to shrink more and more. I still wear an old Bears jersey with Zorich on the back. We pound a few beers, have a couple shots, then game on. In fact, the ball marker goes from a couple cans of Old Style or Bud Light, to a cooler and case.
We went from tackle to two hand touch due to progressing age of the players. But it still hurts. Last year I heard three distinct pops in my shoulder after missing a dump pass in the flat as I hit the dirt. But I was able to put up Christmas lights the next day scaling an old ladder 25 feet in the air. Dislocated a shoulder, pulled ligaments in my knee, bloody lip and nose, but the beer stays cold and we are men. Silly men in suburbia.
In the end, we go back to our families to reunite another year. And no beer cans are left behind. All that is left is the echo of men screeching like soroity girls in chapter and roughed up sod.

Have a safe and happy thanksgiving. I can imagine we have had our various challenges and rewards this year, just remember it's about family.
And remember the Pilgrims were aiming for Virginia and found Massachusetts instead. If men asked for directions, who knows what would've happened.

There is a subtle difference between a Soviet gulag and the prison where we are holding terrorists whom desire to kill our brave soldiers and your children (I gotta be a little sensationalist there)
What a gulag really is:

Waited tables tonight, keeps me busy and tragically what I consider a night out anymore. Back to reality, the friggin' loons were out. I felt bad for leavin' early due to high pings coming off my spider senses. But people, I can guarantee you someone will get thrown out. A little tip from little old obob. If you ever have to physically remove someone from an establishment. I highly recommend you use a bear hug from the side. Make sure you are under the arms and have your head against their back. First, your hands under the armpit make it difficult for them to pry them apart and break a digit. Second, your head against their back prevents a head but. Practice on a family member or loved one. Most important, do not let go unless you have sufficient reserves.
I've also wrestled two men off a pool table by first tackling them, then grabbing one by the neck and the other placing my knee on his chest. My arm was sore the next day due to repeated blows from one guy trying to hit the other as I attempted to subdue them.

Intruder dies in home invasion

Indianapolis - Metro Police say a father killed an intruder in his daughter's bedroom in an apparent act of self-defense.
According to police, 52-year-old David Meyers broke into a home in the 3500 block of West 79th Street early Sunday morning and entered the bedroom of a 17-year-old girl. He was carrying condoms, a rope and a knife, wearing nothing but a mask and a pair of latex gloves.
"He had come in, apparently, with the objective of raping her," IMPD Sgt. Matt Mount said.
She was screaming as her father ran into the bedroom and fought off the attacker. When police arrived, the father had his arm around the intruder's throat and was holding him.

Death has been on my mind a lot lately. Don't fret, I'm not suicidal, nor suffering from a terminal illness.
It's the next adventure in life that fascinates me. I've studied different views of the afterlife from over prepped Ancient Egyptian to pious Christian to the foolish atheist (no bias at the end there?) And it isn't a question of there is no God, God exists. But there have been so many afterlifes out there, what is it?
Maybe it is a concern of the atheist with the odd belief of a vast nothing when we expire. To simple of an answer with no intellectual challenge. Look at what we think. Look how we have advanced. It's an easy out.
Hindu and reincarnation, I don't like the idea of coming back as an Untouchable.

One of the great shows of the late 70s to 80s was WKRP in Cincinnati. This was one of those perfectly cast shows. Nobody could play Johnny Fever better than Howard Hesseman. Loni, Loni, Loni. Hubba Hubba Hubba.
And the tragic nerd whom many of us felt sympathy and kinship, Les Nessman.
WGN has been running reruns and the classic "Baseball" episode was shown. I found some trivia from Something Old, Something New.

The episode features the second and last appearance (on the original series anyway) of writer Bill Dial as the station engineer, Bucky. Also, Ross Bickell, who plays the manager of WPIG, was married to Loni Anderson at the time. Since she was having an affair with her co-star Gary Sandy, it must have made for an awkward shoot.

Lucious Newsom, a Catholic activist who used his knack for begging to build Anna's House, 303 N. Elder Ave., died at about 8:20 p.m. at the hospital's Beech Grove campus after a battle with cancer. Some sources put his age at 92.

Outside of the usual sports, (Bears/Football, Cubs & National Soccer action) my TV runs either children shows or the History Channel. Most major network shows are predictable, insipid or in an arrogant sense, numbing.
But there are four shows I eagerly await every week:

Burn Notice on USA: Any chance to see Bruce Campbell hamming it up is worth it. And if you want to catch a real odd film, Bubbal Ho-tep. He is Elvis in hiding and Ossie Davis as JFK. Yes, Ossie is black.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA: I was wary of this show at first. But the unbridled eccentric genius of Vincent D'Onofrio is worth every episode. Even the return of Chris Noth to the franchise is worth it. But most of all, I love Leslie Hendrix. She has played the savvy ME Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers for all three franchise shows.

Eureka on SciFi: This brings out my inner geek. My meager grey matter is generally history or philosophically driven. But the sci-fi angle, perfectly cast and playful physics laden banter makes me giggle like Archimedes. (Who is given his props with a statue in the middle of the town. Plus there is Jo played by Erica Cerra.

Penn & Teller Bullshit on Showtime: And these two. They are bombastic and silent. Atheist and Libertarian. And they make you think. Unafraid to challenge any group, from Code Pink to the Catholic Church to NASA. The profane duo are at their best unchained and self-rightous.

Each show has wit, intelligence, truly character driven and unique. It isn't that other shows reek of mediocrity, but my time is limited. I could never commit to the brilliant Lost like a good marriage. And the original Law & Order is like a drunken booty call at 2 a.m. you never let go.

There has always been a mystic with the "Sweet Science." Maybe it's because I can't. Maybe it's because there is a certain amount of grace in its savagery. But boxing has long rested in American lore. From Johnson to Ali to Rocky Balboa. There has been a sense of awe and distant admiration for the boxer.
Not to mention one my favorite Simon and Garfunkal songs.

An analyst that has caught my eye and ear is Teddy Atlas from ESPN and covering the Olympics. When you listen to the old pugilist on ESPN, you learn strategy and feel the passion for the sport. Not to mention the old punchy could clean my clock with little if any effort. He has that nose that has been broken several times to many. But his candor reeks of knowledge.

My eldest daughter picked up the Annie soundtrack from the local library recently. Thus, I have been bombarded by the soundtrack everytime we ride in the minivan. My daughters are beginning to pick up the lyrics bit by carrot top singing bit. It is cute, but I would have acquitted the orphanage matron for manslaughter as she rang their "little necks". The sun has come out, it is a hard knock life and herbie hoover get slammed.

At the Dave show Friday night, I was conversing with one my best friends. He and I have been roommates, been in each others weddings, committed a couple felonies ... you get the picture. We have been known to throw down beers watching election results like it was the Super Bowl.

I was going to post part of his letter to his fans, but it is mindless drivel. A hint, shut up and sing.

This year I was going to wear an anti-Obama shirt, like the "snob" one to be purely antagonistic. Yes, my goal was to be that ass. And we know the obama freaks are devoid of humor as John Stewart pointed out.

When Stewart on "The Daily Show" recently tried to joke about Obama changing his position on campaign financing, for instance, he met with such obvious resistance from the audience, he said, "You know, you're allowed to laugh at him." Stewart said in a telephone interview on Monday, "People have a tendency to react as far as their ideology allows them."

Alas, it would not be fair to my wife to listen to the verbal attacks. So I'll play nice. But if I see something asinine, I will post pictures via cell phone. Maybe some video.

Pathetic and weak is the feminist movement in our country as they try to look tough with Code Pink and enjoying the freedom to attack our Marines in Berkley or Condi Rice in the halls of the Capitol with "blood" soaked hands.
Basically, grow a pair.
And as for the people who think we should negotiate with Ahmjahad straight up, do you really think he is in charge? He is a mere and temporary puppet of the clerics and mullahs who run Iran.
Finally, how many of us would have been buried up to our necks or waists?

Army to Shoot Live Pigs to Save Wounded Soldiers' Lives

HONOLULU — The Army on Friday was holding an exercise involving shooting live pigs and treating the gunshot wounds in training it says is critical to saving soldiers' lives but which has sparked outcry from animal-rights activists.

As usual the hypocrites at PETA are up in arms.
My solution is simple, let them volunteer to take a bullet for the pigs.
Plus I have a wicked jones for a pulled pork BBQ sandwich about right now.

So Obama is going to Europe? Why? Hopefully to cement his place in the narcissistic politician hall of fame. But that is already full and we have found him to be another politician, he doesn't get the wing Michelle would be proud of.
Slate brought forth four things that could go wrong. I would be happy for two to happen.

Here are a few that could turn Obama Does Europe into a nightmare:

1. The Big Gaffe: All those cameras mean any substantive slip-up will be magnified. There's no indication that the Obama team will be letting the foreign press question him, and for good reason—they're often tougher than the U.S. press corps, in part because they don't have to worry about long-term access. If they do get to fire some questions, the threat of trouble goes up.

The press in Europe would slit a puppy's throat for a story. And we know how well Obama speaks when he isn't given the script before hand. There was a French movie called Ridicule several years ago. In it, a noble used his wit to help his people, his man rival knew the topics before, thus rehearsed. Guess the ending there. My point is, Obama is not strong in improv, he needs his teleprompter. What if we tricked him into the Q & A at Parliament? It would be a stammering bloodbath.

2. The Ugly American: Obama is very popular in Europe. He'll be well-received, and that may delight many Americans who don't like what George Bush has done to the country's reputation.

Of course he doesn't speak Spanish or French. But ignore the facts.

3. Phony Junket: McCain's team will charge that Obama isn't working; he's just going overseas to make pretty pictures. In diplomatic relations, good pictures and goodwill matter, but there's truth to this charge—he's not going to Germany or Iraq to negotiate a treaty or anything. No real work is being done, but the Obama campaign will strive to give the impression that the senator is listening and evaluating, particularly when he visits Iraq and Afghanistan, even if he's not likely to change his position on those wars.

Umm, have you seen his website on Iraq, oh wait. That has been "adjusted".

4. Hubris Alert: Who does Obama think he is? He's not the president. He's not even his party's official nominee yet. Obama has no shortage of self-confidence. If the trip looks a little too presumptuous, voters who have doubts about his experience might wonder where he gets off acting a part they haven't given him yet.

I never claim to be a saint, nor the great satan.

One of my odd summer rituals is watching that incorrigible rascal Regis and Kelly. I know, but we all have our oddities.

Meryl Streep is on talking about Mama Mia this morning. They praise her, she gives her haughty laugh and basks in the accolades. As I watch her, she has that disconnect from you and I one would prejudice with "those Hollywood types."

As they talk about her adoration of Bette Davis, Streep praises her for her character roles. It's her last line of the interview that dares my ire, she says she loves how she was not afraid to play a "bitch."

Did I tell you I watch this with my three children sometimes?

Did I?

Maybe she should have been looking in the mirror when she said that.
